Managing Heat Stress in Aquaculture During Summer
Every summer, nearly every farmer faces the same challenge: rising water temperature triggers a chain reaction more complex than it first appears. For every few degrees the water warms, dissolved oxygen saturation drops noticeably — right as shrimp and crab metabolism and appetite are both increasing, sharply widening the supply-demand gap.
Heat affects farming operations on multiple fronts: insufficient dissolved oxygen often leads to afternoon surfacing and gasping; algae metabolizing too fast can trigger a boom-then-crash cycle, with water quality deteriorating suddenly right after a crash; and shrimp and crab themselves show reduced resistance under heat stress, making summer the peak window for disease outbreaks.
The right response is to act ahead of time, not after the fact. Before typhoons or heavy rain arrive, feed an anti-stress nutritional supplement preventively to help shrimp and crab build up stress buffering capacity in advance — rather than waiting for surfacing or silent mortality before reacting.
For day-to-day management, increase the frequency of water conditioning during hot weather, since the higher risk of algae die-off means water color needs closer monitoring — act the moment you see signs of a shift rather than waiting until symptoms are obvious. Aeration schedules should also track water temperature, particularly through the afternoon-to-evening metabolic peak.
Feeding management needs to track temperature too: shrimp and crab appetite often dips temporarily in extreme heat, and forcing the usual feeding rate at that point only wastes feed and pollutes the water. Adjust downward based on actual observed feeding, then scale back up once conditions improve.
In short, the core summer strategy is "anticipate, increase frequency, stay flexible" — turning reactive crisis management into proactive prevention significantly reduces the single biggest risk window of the year.
