For shrimp and crab farmers, water quality accounts for the majority of what determines a successful season. A sudden shift to dark, foul-smelling, or unusually clear water is often the first warning sign before disease breaks out.
Algae cultivation is the starting point for any water management plan. Newly filled or recently exchanged ponds lack the nutrient base needed for beneficial algae to establish dominance — applying disinfectants or oxygenators alone at this stage often backfires. Instead, start with an amino-acid and trace-mineral-based fertilizer to help diatoms and chlorella colonize quickly, producing the ideal "fertile, active, tender, clear" water color.
Once algae balance is established, daily maintenance shifts to managing the bacterial community. As leftover feed and waste accumulate through the mid-to-late culture period, failing to break them down with Bacillus and lactic acid bacteria blends quickly leads to ammonia and nitrite spikes, algae crashes, and oxygen depletion. We recommend applying a probiotic water conditioner every 7-10 days, adjusting frequency upward during hot weather when metabolism and oxygen demand both increase.
One detail farmers often overlook: water conditioners should never be applied alongside disinfectants. Live-bacteria products need at least a 2-3 day gap from any disinfection step, or the two will cancel each other out — wasting both money and effort. When planning a treatment schedule, keep "disinfection" and "water conditioning" on separate timelines rather than applying whichever comes to mind first.
Finally, remember that water management isn't a one-time fix — it's continuous throughout the culture cycle. A simple daily habit of checking water color, pH, and dissolved oxygen will save far more money than reacting after a crisis hits.
